Akwa Ibom is one of the 36 states of Nigeria. Created in September 1987, out of its neighbouring Cross River State, it has a population of over six million people. The state is located in the coastal South-South geopolitical part of the country. It is bordered on the east and west by the states of Cross River, Rivers and Abia respectively, and on the south by the Atlantic Ocean and partly by Cross River State.
The capital city of Akwa Ibom State is Uyo. The state is populated mainly by three major, nearly-homogenous ethnic groups, namely the Ibibio, Annang, and Oron, spread across its 31 local government areas. Besides English Language, the Ibibio, Annang, and Oron languages are spoken generally in the state. Some prominent places of interest include Abak, Eket, Ibeno, Ikot Abasi, Ikot Ekpene, Oron, Ukanafun.
Akwa Ibom people have a rich cultural heritage. The Ekpe Society - a body of men used as agent of authority in traditional administration – is one. It is noted for its activities and ceremonies. A most prominent one is the fattening room culture among the people: it is a period of education, where young brides are taught house-keeping, childcare, the history and culture of their people, and how to be a wife, mother and responsible citizens of the community.
Akwa Ibom State is rich in huge oil and gas mineral deposits, and agricultural crops like oil palm, rubber, etc, and thriving fishing industry. The state is home to Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) plant, the Qua Iboe Oil Terminal operated by Exxon Mobil in Eket, the Aluminium Smeltering Company, Ikot Abasi, and several other allied oil and gas and logistics companies, oil palm, paper mill plantations, amongst others.
A land of beauty, brain and bountiful natural resources, the main traditional economic activities of Akwa Ibom are oil-palm production, fishing, farming and trading in agricultural produces and household goods. The people warmly embraced early Western education, leading to the establishment of the first secondary school in the state in 1905, the Methodist Boys High School, Oron. Today, many higher institutions of learning are spread across the state, such as the University of Uyo, Maritime Academy of Nigeria, Akwa Ibom State University, Akwa Ibom State Polytechnic, etc. The people are predominately Christians – of the Catholic, Protestant, Evangelical faith - but some equally indulge in their traditional religious practices.
Akwa Ibom people are renowned for their hospitality and culture which attract tourism and commerce to the area. The state has functional facilities for both international and local business enterprises and recreation. The state boosts of the Akwa Ibom International Airport (AKIA), major seaports on the Atlantic Ocean, and a proposed construction of a world-class seaport, the Ibaka Seaport; international standard-size stadium, Nest of Champions, the imposing 21-storey Dakkada trade tower, Ibom Hotel & Golf Resort, a good network of intra- and intercity roads, health facilities, schools, among others.
